Pathways & Careers

At St Helena, we recognise that career development is a lifelong journey, and we are committed to helping students build the skills, knowledge, and resilience needed to navigate the evolving world of work. Our approach focuses on empowering students to explore options, take on new challenges, and reflect on their personal and career goals. Through a comprehensive, student-focused careers program, we ensure that nearly 100% of our students transition into their preferred pathway post-high school.

Career education begins in Year 7 and continues throughout each year, with students receiving increasing levels of guidance and opportunities for self-exploration. We believe in embedding career management skills across the curriculum, supporting students as they develop self-awareness, adaptability, and informed decision-making. Our team works closely with students, families, and the wider community to ensure that students leave school well-prepared for further study, training, or employment.

  • Career Education at Every Year Level:
We embed career-focused lessons throughout each year level, helping students develop the self-awareness and skills to explore their potential pathways.
  • Pathway Interviews from Year 9:
Individual interviews guide students through career planning, subject selection, and alternative pathways, ensuring they receive personalised advice and support.
  • Work Experience in Year 10:
Every student participates in a structured work experience program, providing valuable insight into real-world industries and career paths.
  • Resume Writing and RIJI Job Interviews:
Students develop practical skills through mock job interviews with external professionals, preparing them to navigate future job markets.
  • University and TAFE Connections:
Students have access to course guides, university open days, and workshops to explore further education options, with support provided throughout the application process.
  • Dedicated Careers Hub:
A welcoming on-campus space where students can access resources, meet with our Careers and Pathways team, and receive individualised counselling.
  • Career Action Planning:
Students reflect on their personal and career goals by completing a Career Action Plan each semester, helping them evaluate and adapt their decisions.
  • Support for Subject Selection and Alternative Pathways:
Tailored counselling ensures students choose subjects aligned with their aspirations and receive advice on VET, VM, and School-Based Apprenticeship options.
  • Careers Counselling and Funding Support:
Students and families have access to personalised counselling, including guidance on scholarships, apprenticeships, and funding applications.
  • Years 7 & 8:
Introduction to self-awareness and career exploration through activities that encourage reflection on family, friendships, culture, and personal interests. Students also gain access to the MyFuture platform and begin the Career Action Plan that they will use throughout their high school journey.
  • Years 9 & 10:
Students explore careers more deeply through the MyFuture platform, participate in pathway interviews, and take part in the Morrisby profiling to assess their strengths and interests. Year 10 students undertake work experience and engage in career workshops led by industry professionals.
  • Years 11 & 12:
Focus shifts to preparing students for the transition to tertiary studies, TAFE, apprenticeships, or employment. Students receive detailed guidance on university applications, attend course expos, and develop study strategies to achieve their personal best.

Support the Work Experience Program

We encourage students to take advantage of co-curricular opportunities, volunteer work, and community involvement to build practical experience and enrich their career development. Parents, alumni, and community members are not only welcomed but encouraged to share their expertise or offer work placements to support our students as they undertake Work Experience in December.
